Running a hairdressing salon is a big job. Apprentices have to learn at College and in the salon about customer services, using technology, keeping records, making appointments and responding to customers. They are taught a lot about good communication in the salon and in the College

Here is all the equipment that the apprentice uses when she is cutting and styling hair. Each student has a mobile work station like this. Apprentices go to the College for four years. At the end of four years if they have passed all their examinations they can work in a salon or start a salon of their own. Most new graduates go to work in an already established salon and continue their study in the area of 'running a small business'.

The apprentice has learnt how to separate the hair correctly for the foils. At Vocational College a lot of time is spent teaching the students how to do this and they practice on a variety of models. The workplace supervisor checks on the work that the apprentice has done and gives advice and guidance when it is needed. the customer was very happy.

The apprentice here is working with foils. She has tried this a number of times before and her workplace supervisor now thinks she is ready to do this independently.

The apprentice had to learn about all the chemicals that are used in hairdressing. Here are just a few of them. She learnt a lot about this at her College where the different chemical compositions of the dyes and treatments were explained. This learning took over 2 years as there is a lot to learn. Her workplace supervisor guided her in the wrokplace and gave her lots of opportunities to observe and practice.

This is the area where the student learnt to wash customers' hair. She learnt this skill in the first year of her apprenticeship and practiced on a lot of customers. Her workplace supervisor gave her lots of fine instructions and she also learnt theory at her College. The chairs are very comfortable and they massage the customer as they sit and have their hair washed.

This is a hairdressing salon in Wagga NSW. A student is an apprentice in this salon and she works in the salon for four days each week. On the other day she goes to the Technical and Vocational Education College where she does a lot of theory. It is a very popular salon and it has many customers.

We
follow the students in every moment, but from "the side", so they feel
support and that they have help right away if they need it.
This students are in their last year, so they know a lot, and they can handle the most by themselves.
It´s important that the student shows that he/she can work like an proffecional hairdresser/student.

Learning situation
On the two first pictures we are teaching the students to do highlights

When we see that the student can handle the traditional way to do highlights with folie, we continue to show them a similar way with a special borad as support. To make it more stable, and to be able to get closer to the scalp.
